When I built the house I lined up the back window in the great room with the foyer so when you stood on the front porch you could look through the house and see the lake. The sunsets directly behind the house this time of year which is good because it heats the brick on the bottom level and acts like a big battery and adds some heat to the house. In the summer the sunsets more to the left back corner of the house and that's all shaded by trees plus I have the overhangs on the roof bigger than normal to get shade during the hot seasons.

I like to plan things out in my head as I go.

It's just a fluke, but I noticed a few years ago that the shadows of the setting sun coming in the back window are pretty close to being parallel to the walls of the greatroom on my birthday and I keep intending to devise a way to mark the march of shadows on the days before and after the 16th but I never can remember to do it or I end up having to go somewhere around sunset and miss it.

I'm thinking of getting some dark colored contact paper and cutting a circle out of it and slapping it on the backwindow, and then mark with tape on the front door where the dot is and then I should be able to get a pretty good guess over 47 feet of how close it actually is to being heavenly aligned.
