Aug. 28th, 2009 @ 10:48 am Mysterious Melon
The deer have pretty much stomped out the melon patch and I had a vine dying with a big something that I thought was a pumpkin from the size so I picked it being that it was gonna die in a couple days as the vine withered...

I left it in the car over night since forgetting is what I do best and got in it to look for my camera because the squirrels out back were taunting the cat big time and it was like being in the can't elope produce section so puzzled me grabbed a knife and cut it open and it's bright orange and sweet despite not being 100% developed.

Somewhere I had the foresight to save the seed packs remembering where is a completely different matter but and if I find them I should make a note of the variety since it feels likes its a two pounder.

Next year I'll definately fence off an area and set it all to run automatically and maybe just grow cantaloupes it's almost as easy as growing trees...

I'm gonna save the seeds.

Have you planted those seeds, and did they turn out okay? I've read that many varieties are so hybridized that the seeds won't produce the same fruit that the seeds came out of in the first place. They tend to revert to one or the other of the parent plants. Or maybe that's just corn. I was raised in Nebraska, so I learned a lot of that Ag stuff when I was younger, but I don't remember much of it now...
